First Aid Kit: What to Do Immediately After Your Cat Ingests a Poisonous Leaf

Discovering your cat has eaten a toxic plant is every owner's nightmare. The actions you take in the first few minutes can make a massive difference.
1. Remove the Plant
Gently remove any remaining plant material from your cat's mouth. Do not force their mouth open if they are aggressive.
2. Identify the Plant
Knowing exactly what they ate is crucial. Use our Search Tool to identify the plant and check its toxicity level.
3. Do NOT Induce Vomiting
Unless explicitly instructed by a vet, never try to make your cat vomit. Some substances (like Bleach or caustics) cause more damage coming back up.
4. Call for Help Immediately
Time is of the essence. Contact your vet or an emergency clinic.
- ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435
- Pet Poison Helpline: (855) 764-7661
5. Gather a Sample
Take a piece of the plant (or vomit/stool) with you to the vet. This helps them confirm the toxin.
